Our first Lambs!!!!

Today we had our first lambs.  Our flock of five Ewes has one three year old ewe, one two year old ewe, and 3 ewe lambs.  The three year old ewe (4026) had triplets today!  Two ewes and a ram!

Our first lambs on their day of birth!

Not sure what time they were born as when I went out to farm first thing in the morning, the lambs were hollering.  They were born on the pasture, and I quickly moved lambs and mother into a pen made of 6 hog panels.  At first only saw one drink before having to go to work.  Was worried about the rest today, but after work, came back to find all the lambs nursing and appearing healthy.  I applied iodine to the umbilical cords via a spray bottle (4026 wasn’t too happy with me handling her lambs), and spent an hour or so observing.  All appear happy and doing well.  Forecast for tonight is rain and a 40 degree low.  Hopefully their temporary shelter (made with hog panels and a canvas tarp) will keep them dry.

Reread lambing chapter in The Sheep Book: A Handbook for the Modern Shepherd and learned I did the umbilicals wrong.  Should have pinched off the umbilicals.  If they are still there tomorrow will pinch them off.  Also read about ear tags, and will buy some tags tomorrow night to apply on Saturday.
